DDRA celebrates success on and off the track

November 17, 2009 - David W. Ryan

The Dirt Drag Racing Association (DDRA) held their 2nd Annual DDRA Awards Banquet this past weekend at the home of Gayla and David McMillin in the Sandy Lake community. More than a 100 members, guests, and staff joined in the celebration of the past racing year.

“It was a great turnout,” DDRA President David McMillin said of the event which included more than $7,000 in plaques, awards, and door prizes. “I think most everyone walked away with something.”

McMillin explained more: “This year we gave each of our eight class winners a GOLD CARD which gives them free entry into their class at every DDRA sanctioned event. We don’t know of any other association that is doing this and it’s just one of the extra things we are doing for our members.”

In addition to lots of prizes, BASE Fuels provided two 55 gallon drums of racing fuel to be raffled with McMillin winning one of the chances and Harold Bordelon of Jonesville the other.

Attendees were treated to meal comprised of smoked chicken and baked potatoes from caterer Gerald Huffman; some specialty baked beans loaded with sausage and beef with secret ingredients from Austin Butler; and pastalaya made by John Chambers of Denham Springs, La.

A few specialty awards were given to various groups and individuals including Death Valley Racing for being such a big part of the Dirt Drag Racing Association and Louisiana Off Road Race Park. Others awards included Walter Keyes, Mike Taylor, Gayla McMillin, Ronda Baker, and John Chambers.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank our drivers, sponsors, fans, and everyone who helped make this season so successful for the DDRA and Louisiana Off Road Race Park,” McMillin closed the event by saying. “I would also like to say a very special thank you to Mike Lee, Terry Hilton, Eddie Butler, Billy Maxie, Rose Glass and the entire Marsala Beverage Company of Ferriday (La.), for their continued support.”

“We have enjoyed this season of racing and are already looking forward to next year. Our goal is to have eight racing dates and to have our schedule finalized by the end of January.”

McMillin said the 2010 racing schedule will be posted on the DDRA website as soon as it is finalized.
